This last week’s report from VK5MRD’s Thursday 23/04/2009. Stations heard were:- JA2IGY/b, VK2RSY/b and VK4RTL/b. The VK4RTL bcn was in till late last night and it has been in all day today but sadly no stations heard at all. Stations worked were:-Only VK5’s.

Friday 24/04/2009. Stations heard were:- KQ6PK, KH6AP/b, KH6RC, JA2IGY/b, ZL2MHF/b, ZL3TEN/b, VK1XP, VK2RSY/b, VK4RTL/b and VK8VF/b. Stations worked were:- VK2RB and VK4CQ. I just spoke to Doug VK9ZLH on 80m. He is back on Lord Howe Island, so keep a listen out for Doug on 10m.

Sunday 26/04/2009. Stations heard were:- KQ6PK, KH6AP/b, KH6WO/b, KH6RC, JA2IGY/b, JA4GXX, 9W2CBL, YC6NE, VR2B/b, RR9O/b, ZL2MHF/b, ZL3TEN/b, VK2RSY/b, VK4RTL/b, VK7ZE via Scatter and VK8VF/b. Stations worked were:- It was amazing that I could hear any stations at all today as for most of the day the QRN was really bad. I only worked a VK5 today but as you can see I was able to hear a few stations when the QRN settled a little.

Graham, WE5I was giving it a good try this week. He worked KH6RC 5/8. “Sunday was completely quiet all day until 7:05PM local time, when KH6RC jumped out of the noise calling CQ on 28400. I worked him, put him in the spots, then listened as he worked W5s, W7s, and a few stations in Central America. I could not hear any of the stations he worked.”

Wednesday calls_worked: N0MUD/M 5/5, NG4D 5/9, KK6D 5/9, “The band opened at 3:50PM local time, and stayed open just 35 minutes. I worked stations in North Carolina, Colorado, and California.”

Thursday Worked: KK6D 5/5, K7ULS 5/5, W7BPR 5/5, KH7HI 5/3, AD7EO 5/4, AC0L 5/7. “Thursday's opening lasted 3 1/2 hours, yet was not as strong as Wednesday's opening. I worked stations in California, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and Hawaii.”

Sunday; “The Hawaii QSOs were a surprise and VERY welcome since the last time I logged Hawaii on 10 Meters was 3/27/08! All of my contacts this week were with 25 watts to a 38 inch diameter magnetic loop built for 10 meters. The antenna is on a tripod in the back yard, with the bottom of the loop at 4 1/2ft.”

Dean MW6VHF asks “Hi Tony, although only using a mediocre antenna for 10m a half-size G5RV AT 45ft so not expecting much but I constantly hear nothing, any tips on times etc..being best to listen or do I as I suspect need a better more directional antenna any tips would be welcome I also suspect being in the South Wales Valleys isn’t a great location Regards Dean”

Dean you only have to look at the list for G, M, GW, etc to see the lack of propagation to the UK. Undoubtedly a directional antenna might help if conditions improve but if they don’t then you’ll be lucky to hear anyone else in nearby in Mountain Ash or Merthyr much less Brazil or Saudi. As for being in Wales, its fine. I had GW4CJC in the ‘70s and it was a magnet for DX (HQ1 Minibeam up Caerphilly Mountain) One Sunday morning I had VUs calling me on10m. But now that is a thing of the past. The guy to ask is Steve GW4BLE who used to live up in Blackwood, but now lives in Newport. He was always a 10m enthusiast.

Sun: A new sunspot is forming at eastern wing of the sun. Its magnetic polarity identifies it as a member of old Solar Cycle 23.

A gamma-ray burst detected by NASA's Swift satellite has smashed the previous distance record for the most powerful explosions in the Universe. Researchers are calling it "an incredible find" and a "true blast from the past." Get the full story from Science@NASA
