Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
6 August, 2008

The CW/No CW vote.
Of the 29 persons who voted, 24 said
“Yes to CW reports”, 3 said “No to CW reports”,
1 forgot to choose and 1 voted twice.

This looks like it means that the majority want CW. However 29 total votes over 4 weeks is a tiny proportion of the amateurs who read this column. So I declare this vote not representative of the readers in general who don’t seem to mind one way or the other.

I did look at the amount of CW contacts in comparison to Phone contacts. When conditions are poor then CW contacts out-number Phone. When conditions are good it evens out. So, to be more representative of 10 Metres in general, I will include CW contacts starting next week.

The 10-10 phone contest certainly livened things up on the weekend with lots of USA amateurs in the lists. Saturday top though was Steve, MW0ZZK/P probably portable from Denbighshire (Wales) WAB SJ25, IO83JB.

Dave, VK5MRD has been up against it these past few weeks. Here’s his weekend report.
Saturday: “Again I did not have much time in front of the radio today but I am pleased to say that there was some winter "E" activity around on 10m. I worked 5 stations today, x3 from VK2 (NSW) and x2 from VK3 (Victoria). Stations worked were VK2ZQ, VK2ZMT, VK2SPR, VK3XQ and VK3DUT. I did swing my beam towards EU and the middle east but Alas nothing was heard. The QRN was nice and quiet today with the ambient noise floor at zero. Lets hope tomorrow is more fruitful.

Sunday: “Today was quite quiet on 10m here in VK land. I did quite a bit of listening today with not much activity at all. I was able to work Rob VK4LS and later VK2VHF Adrian in Sydney reported via the "VKlogger" that he could hear me. No signs of any international DX.” Here in Europe we didn’t do too bad.

Steve, GW8XZJ/P, worked EA6UP 5/9 on Wednesday, HA8LLK 5/9 , OE8SKQ 5/9+, EA1DBX 5/5, G4CXW 5/5 on Thursday and 9A3B 5/7, EA5DFV 5/5, AM5SP 5/6, EA4KD 5/7, EB3EPR 5/7, YT5A 5/8 on Saturday.
He too bemoans lack of time but for the right reasons.
“Not too much time available again last week, due to chores and cricket! Mainly lunch-time up the hill with my sandwich. I'm now working from my home office, so if the band opens I can get on!!”

Cricket is a major distraction for me too. It just a shame the England team were not playing it (batsmen anyway) as well as the South Africans. Ne’mind, KP is captain now and that will mean er, erm something, not sure what. And miracle, Middlesex won the T20 final, amazing. It’s the first silverware we’ve won since 1993 I think.

Contests: The biggy this weekend is the WAE DX Contest (Worked All Europe), CW section. So it looks like my CW reporting will get off to a good start.

Sun: Blank again. But as regular readers will know, the annual Perseid meteor shower begins this week, slowly at first, with just a few meteors per hour, then building to a peak dozens of times more intense on Tuesday, August 12th.

The source of the shower is Comet Swift-Tuttle, which has littered the August portion of Earth's orbit with space dust.

I’m usually in a very good spot in southern Spain with little light pollution for this event. However this year we are giving it a miss so I’ll have to put up with the light pollution in London. Did get a good (for London) view of Jupiter last week.

On Aug. 4th, a bright fireball streaked across the skies of New Mexico.

Amateur radio astronomer Thomas Ashcraft not only photographed the meteor, but also recorded the "sweet stereophonic shimmering" echoes of distant radio stations bouncing off its ionized trail.
