David, CE2WZ, says, “It was a slightly better week on 10 metres.
I tried to participate in the 10-10 contest over the weekend and just for a short while conditions opened to the US. The following is a list of my contacts. 31 st July:EA7HNE, 1 st: August KB3NXT, KC2QXA, KA9BYN, KJ4JSQ, N4JED, 2 nd August: EA3JL, EA1DKF, ON5SD, DO3KTM.
Also on 1 st August I heard PI4DX on 28473 and OH6RX on 28445 but both were taking part in the EU HF contest so I could not work them. By the way I was doing a survey of my QSOs over the past 18 months and nearly a quarter (about 800) have been on 10 metres though quite a few have been in contests. So the band appears better than we sometimes think.”
I managed to get into a localish 10 metre net on Saturday some time after 21:00. I couldn’t hear everyone but did manage a chat with Martin, 2E0UKL. He’s sent in a report this week.
“Worked: E71A, S53M & S58AL (all about 5/7 in & out) Heard: EC1AJL (5/9 in).
Hi Tony, sorry that we could not have more of a QSO the other day but there were a lot of people on that net. I believe that there is an SSB net every Saturday after 9, unfortunately being spread all over the place I could only hear half of them. I usually monitor 29.600 (FM) for activity, I don't normally have regular times that I use the radio due to random commitments, but you can always give a shout on that frequency and if I am nearby I will come back to you. I regularly speak to Erik (M0JIY) on there and am helping out a G7VDI to get on 10 metres also, although living in a flat he has more restricted conditions. You will also be pleased to know that my vertical half-wave is now properly situated. Cheers – Martin”
Excellent stuff Martin, the more we spread the word about 10m the more people we have to chat to. I will certainly check 29.600MHz more regularly.

Sun: The sun is blank again but we do have swirling debris on Jupiter. (see spaceweather.com)
Earth is entering a stream of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, setting the stage for the 2009 Perseid meteor shower. We're just in the outskirts of the debris stream now. If you go out at night and stare at the sky, you'll probably only see a few Perseids per hour. This will change, however, as August unfolds. Earth passes through the densest part of the debris stream sometime on August 12th. Then, you could see dozens of meteors per hour. I will be in Valencia where they have clear skies and hot days so I’m hoping to see plenty.
