Sunday's phone map

And so to reports. Graham G3ZOD asked if
reporters could include short details of their antenna systems to give some context.
This I have done this week but it will not bare repeating every week.

So first off Carl VR2CB.
“Wednesday worked: ZL4CZ 4/3 heard: VK8VF/B 439. After a good opening Sunday there has been almost zilch since. Steven (ZL4CZ) was a
nice surprise although he was down 4 'S' points from Sunday. Saturday calls_worked: ZL4CZ 3/2 Friday the band opened up nicely to VK/ZL. The contest for me was terrible! Saturday I heard just 5 JA's and ZL4CZ who popped up for a second or so. Sunday if anything was for me worse, just 3 stations heard and worked WH2D 5/9 although I admit my efforts Sunday were not too serious after Saturday's performance.”

Conditions in the UK were no better as you can see from the lack of copious Gs in the lists. Carl uses a magnetic loop or 10m monoband vertical ant and other odd short bits of wire. Hope the family is all OK and the best of Xmas greetings to them. We’ve got our son in law, (also called Carl), daughter and Grandson with us from Hong Kong at the moment.

Now to Dave the motor man VK5MRD. Dave uses a ½ wave vertical and a 5 element Monoband yagi for Ten Metres.

“Thursday 11/12/2008. Stations heard were:- BG8FZ, ZL2MHF/b, ZL3TEN/b, VK2RSY/b, VK4RTL/b, VK6RWA/b, VK6RBP/b, VK8VF/b. Stations worked were:- ZL3NB, YB0AJZ, VK4LS and VK7HDX.

Friday 12/12/2008. Stations heard were:- VK2RSY/b, VK4RTL/b, VK4KY, VK6RWA/b, VK6RBP/b and VK8VF/b. Stations worked were:- KH6RC and VK4CAG.

Saturday 13/12/2008. Stations heard were:- JA2IGY/b, KH6RC, ZL2MHF/b, ZL3TEN/b, VK2RSY/b, VK2ERS, VK3TKB, VK4RTL/b, VK6RWA/b, VK6RBP/b, VK7HDX, VK8VF/b. Stations worked were:- BD4CZX, YB0AJZ, JA6WIF, JA7OWD, JH1OCC, JH1BLX, JA7DXX, ZL4CZ, VK2RV, VK2MBA, VK2SF, VK2VFV, VK2ABK, VK2FTZ, VK2HAQ, VK2MRM, VK2HB, VK2UZ, VK4FIL, VK4NDX, VK4LS, VK4CQ, VK7US. Been at work today so my tally is not the best maybe I will have better luck tomorrow even with a head cold Hi Hi.

Sunday 14/12/2008. Stations heard were:- JA2IGY/b, VK2RSY/b, VK2SF, VK2KPP, VK3HEN, VK4RTL/b, VK4CQ, VK6RWA/b, VK6RBP/b, VK7FMPR, VK8VF/b. Stations worked were:-EA8AH, HS0ZGD, JH4UTP, JA4BNN, VK1PWE, VK1JST, VK2JKB, VK2EM, VK2NA, VK2LOB, VK4ATH, VK6ARA and VK8AA. I didn’t get on the radio till very late today as I have a bad cold and had lost my voice. I think I missed quite a bit of good DX. However the highlight has to be being lucky enough to have worked EA8AH at 5/9 but it only lasted a minute or so.

Monday 15/12/2008. Stations heard were:- KH6RC, KH7DX, 9W2IBR, ZL2MHF/b, VK2RSY/b, VK2AAG, VK4RTL/b, VK6RWA/b, VK6RBP/b, VK8VF/b. Stations worked were:- VK2KTT, VK4FABA, VK4ZBV, VK6TY, VK8ZMX and VK8VTX. I am getting my voice back slowly!

Tuesday 16/12/2008. Stations heard were:- 9W6SUE, 9W2VVH, VK2RSY/b, VK4RTL/b, VK4DB, VK4WR and VK8VF/b. Stations worked were:- VK2AAG, VK2HAK, VK2NBT, VK4LS, VK4CQ, VK4ARN.

Wednesday 17/12/2008. Stations heard were:- VK2RSY/b, VK3RMH/b, VK3RHF 10m repeater, VK4RTL/b, VK5MFW/b, VK6RO via the VK5RSC 10m repeater, VK6RWA/b, VK6RBP/b VK7ZE on scatter and VK8VF/b. Stations worked were:- VK2KTT, VK2HEW, VK2JKB, VK3FRAY, VK3AW, VK3LO, VK3KST, VK4CC, VK5MFW and VK8ZMX.

Unusual DX conditions today. On SSB I was able to work Frank VK5MFW at Woomera in the far north of South Australia some 454km away, he was 5/9+20dB. His 10m beacon on 28.187.5MHz was also heard in Adelaide too. Also at the same time I was able to work VK2HEW at Broken Hill in the far central west of NSW some 428km away. I first worked Chris via the VK5RSC 10m repeater. A quick QSY to SSB to finish the QSO followed. He was a good 5/9. Conditions then swung towards VK3 then VK8. So after a slow start it turned out to be quite a productive day on 10m”. It’s alright for some! I guess that does show you the value of a 5 ele monobander rather than my back garden Windom.

On Saturday Mitchel, ZU6M, worked LY1R, EC5SP, YL3FT, EA7HFI, EA3FF, EA7HL, EC1KR, ZC4VC, IT9NTD, UX0FF, C4Z,I2SVA, IO5O, SV8RX, IW9/KJ4DI, I8NHJ, IK8BQE and IW8DCS all on SSB and presumably in the contest

Contests: The PSK DeathMatch Digital Duel 00:00 Saturday to 24:00 Sunday. Similarly OK DX RTTY Contest. Ditto Russian Digital + SSTV Contest. And the "Memory Lives Forever" Contest (Russian I think) 05:00 to 09:00 Saturday. The Croatian CW Contest 14:00 Saturday to 14:00 Sunday. The International Naval Contest Saturday 16:00 ti Sunday 16:00. There are one or two other sprints and things. So quite an active weekend with holiday looming and everything.

Sun: Blank, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum, Santa or Long John Silver?

“NASA's five THEMIS spacecraft have discovered a breach in Earth's magnetic field ten times larger than anything previously thought to exist. The size of the opening and the strange way it forms could overturn long-held ideas of space physics.”
Yet again the world of Physics falls foul of investigation. Actually the Physicists just carry on investigating knowing that they don’t know it all and the press just love a hype.

And Stoke continue to gather points. Really poor game against Fulham, both team and the referee should have lost!! But Blackburn this weekend and then the Mighty Potters will humble Man U at the Brit on Boxing Day. Ha ha.
