Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
04 February, 2009

A back to normal sort of week really with not much activity on any particular day.

K5RQ top early in the week, the VP8LP expedition mid week and weekend. W4S seems to have been a Super Bowl special event station, but it also seems to be a QSL service and a general special event station. Anyone who knows the story could let me know. PU2KDI seems to have been very busy self spotting himself as a QRP station with some doubt as to his legality on 20m. But as it doesn’t concern 10m I will say no more.

And I will get in early with this one (Mr Editor, Sir), Stoke beat the richest club in the world, Manchester City 1 – 0 and we had only 10 men. So there! And they had £100 million pounds to spend just for January, Ha!

Not much in the way of reports this week. For those who didn’t catch it last week Dave, VK2MRD, sent this in late-on.

I am sorry, nothing to report as it has been way too hot over here. I have no air conditioning in my radio shack and it is now 36ºC inside. The temperatures here have been awful. We have just had our hottest day in over 70 years at 45.7ºC and last night was the hottest night on record at 33ºC at the coldest point but most of the night was around 36ºC. So far this week:-
Monday 41ºC
Tuesday 43.2ºC
Wednesday 45.7ºC
Thursday 45ºC
As you can see, it has been way too hot to get on the radio Hi Hi.”

My son who lives in Sydney says they have bush fires and lots of problems. He’s just got his Australian Citizenship so he’s a bit devil- may-care about things at the moment.

Sun: Blank yet one more time. Comet Lulin is approaching Earth. The best date for observation will be 23 rd February, it may even be naked eye.

To the right of the coma is the comet's ion tail. It is a wispy streamer of ionized gas pushed away from the comet by solar wind. The ion tail points almost directly away from the sun. To the left of the coma is the comet's dust tail.

Comet Lulin is leaving a trail of comet dust as it moves through the solar system.

Compared to the lightweight molecules in the ion tail, grains of comet dust are heavier and harder for solar wind to push around. The dust tends to stay where it is dropped. The dust tail therefore traces the comet's curved orbit and does not point directly away from the sun as the ion tail does.
