Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
29 January, 2009
One of those weeks that started as a damp squib and ended with the swoosh of a rocket.
9A2009ST (Men's World Handball Championship, Croatia) was prominent as was SV8FMY (Samos Island) , SY9CVD (Crete) and TI8II (Costa Rica).
HG5BAMAKO is a genuine call. It is Budapest-Bamako Rally Special Event Station. Bakamo is in Mali. Quite a few Mexican stations about on Sunday, I wonder why?

It was quite late in the evening here in VK5 and it was 12.15am local ZL time.. Here we are now an hour later and I am still hearing the ZL beacons and also all the VK beacons too. But the band is all quiet - guess everyone has gone to bed!

Just before 12am last night I was able to work two VK6 stations on 2m FM 146.500MHz at distance just under 2000km away. I have had a pretty good day today!
Tuesday & Wednesday I am sorry, nothing to report as it has been way too hot over here. I have no air conditioning in my radio shack and it is now 36 degrees C inside. The temperatures here have been awful. We have just had our hottest day in over 70 years at 45.7C and last night was the hottest night on record at 33C at the coldest point but most of the night was around 36C
Rafa, XE2RV, sent in a report.
“Sunday worked: B5ANN, XE2MVS,XE1AO, XE3DX, WB6CMX, K2CYN, KI4LIL all on SSB. We had an opening Sunday morning, I stayed there and called and received comeback calls from south USA. I hope we can get that opening for the DX ARRL contest.”
Rafa, I should think everyone hopes that the ARRL contest conditions are like last Sunday!
Mike, KE5GBC, worked W4JKL,W3REW,WW5NQH,KG4HEY,KC9LDG,WB6CMX on Sunday. He says,
“Opening here for last 3 days in evening hours. Sunday was 3 wonderful hours 5-8pm central time. Worked Florida, north Carolina, Illinois, New Mexico, Arizona. so many stations it was pile up city on some frequencys. Many, many stations heard. checked into 2 nets, and was able to try out my 3 foot Wilson on a 2m ground plane adapter kit. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come. It seems we have a opening ahead and during cold fronts approaching. We will take all we can get. 73”
Absolutely right Mike. Here in the UK we’ve heard very little in the way of substantial openings for a while. We hope for good luck and conditions.
Contests : Saturday 1200 - Sunday 1200 EPC WW DX Contest (BPSK125) and Sunday 2000 – 2359 QRP ARCI Fireside SSB Sprint. That’s pretty well it till next week.
Upcoming activity (though not guaranteed to be on 10m.) Information from DXwatch.com and 425DXnews

Sun: Sun’s blank again. However we do have a green comet on its way toward us. Comet Lulin has an atmosphere containing toxic cyanogen (CN) and diatomic carbon (C2). Both substances glow green when illuminated by sunlight via a process called "resonant fluorescence." At closest approach on Feb. 24, 2009, Lulin will stop 38 million miles short of Earth, so it’s not going to be a problem.
Stoke City won the 2nd half against Tottenham Hotspurs 0-1. Unfortunately we lost the first half 3-0. Doh!
Manchester City at the Britannia Stadium next Saturday. We need a win!
