Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
10 June, 2009
A full-ish week, with plenty of activity on all days. As always there was more at the weekend even without the help of a big contest.
It must be about time for me to dream about putting up a beam antenna and buying a linear. Now where’s that catalogue?

More on the Dutch 10m repeaters: after last week's snippet. Frank, PA3CNO, sent in some info.
“Tony, saw you wonder about Dutch 10m repeaters. There is only 1 10m repeater with a license until 2011, and that is PI6TEN, 29.690 in and 29.590 out, power 25W.”
Add to that Bas, PE4BAS, said, “Hi Tony, at least one repeater is active in my area. Website: http://home.planet.nl/~pe1ifh/index.html
Andy G6OHM, who had the original question came back with, “Excellent that's the info I was looking for. As you may have gathered I am very interested in 29mhz fm repeaters. Unfortunately information for 10m repeaters is very out of date .I did contact the German guy who does the repeater listings some time ago for an up to date list. He was not very helpful. I am trying to collate a list for myself but its hard going as info is very vague. I feel 10m SSB and especially 10fm gets very little press as it smacks of CB and 27 mhz ssb. Its like a dirty word not to be mentioned by the RSGB ( Rather Slow Going Backward ) group. I feel the guys in Europe are more switched on with 29fm repeaters and we have a long way to go to catch up.”
An interesting opinion, not one that I’d totally agree with but there’s room on 10m for all sorts.
Steve, M0BPQ, from Palmers Green (not far from me!)
“Worked 57 stations during WPX CW this weekend on 10m. Usual one hop stuff into the Balkans mainly, but a good smattering of Ukrainians and a lone EA6 too...”
I tried to email you Steve but both your email addresses reject incoming. I feel sure we could set up a Ten Metre net. (Maybe even the editor, ‘4TUT, would join in.)
Don, VE7DGP, writes,
“White Rock Amateur Radio Club 10 M net on Sunday 28.690. I can barely hear local stations above the noise level. Other than Sunday bands are dead when I’m home from work”
Dave VK5MRD is struggling to get back into 10m circulation.
“Here is my 10m band report for Sunday 07/06/2009. Stations heard were:- JA2IGY/b, ZL3TEN/b, ZL2MHF/b, VK2RSY/b, VK4RTL/b and VK8VF/b. Stations worked were:- Only VK5`s. Apart from a few VK5`s I did not hear any stations today on 10m just the beacons.
As you can guess by my lack of reports, I have not been on or near the radio for some time. I did manage a few SSTV contacts on 20m today and a couple of QSO`s into Alaska on 20m. Speaking of SSTV please remind your readers of 28.680Mhz. I guess we will have to wait for the cycle to improve but that frequency has been getting some use down here during the summer E`s. Baby "Jessica" is doing well too. I am introducing her to the radio as often as I can Hi Hi!”
Now we know the name of the culprit, Jessica, a sophisticated name. And of course now a plug for 10m Slow Scan TV in VK, 28.680MHz. Ages since I did any SSTV let alone work VK on 10m!

Sun: Sun is blank.
There's an email going around claiming that Mars will look as big as a full Moon on August 27th. Don't believe it. If you go outside after dark on August 27th what you will see of Mars is nothing. Mars won't be there. On that date, the red planet will be nearly 250 million km away from Earth and completely absent from the evening sky.
Japan's Kaguya spacecraft will crash into the Moon on Wednesday, June 10th, at around 1830 UT. The timing favours telescopic observers in east Asia, Australia and New Zealand, who may be able to see a brief flash of light or a plume of debris rising from the Moon's south-eastern limb close to selenographic coordinates 80ºE, 63ºS.
Kaguya is a big spaceship. It masses 2,900 kg and will hit the Moon at an oblique angle travelling approximately 6,000 km/hr. Whether it tumbles and bounces along the lunar surface or runs headlong into some towering crater wall, no one can say. Clues to the end of Kaguya will come on June 10th in the form of an explosive flash (or lack thereof) and high-res images of the crash site taken by future lunar orbiters.
The impact is not accidental. The Japanese space agency, JAXA, has long planned to end the mission in this fashion. Kaguya has been in lunar orbit since Oct. 2007; it has searched dark craters for evidence of frozen water, mapped the moon's gravitational field, and taken some of the all-time prettiest pictures of Earth's satellite.
