Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
26 March, 2009
This important piece of information came from Dave, VK5MRD, but too late to be included last week.
“For those of you that chase the DX activations here is one to look out for. VK9LA (Lord Howe Is) will be active from March 23 till April 3 2009. Active on HF bands up to and including 6m. 10m activity is expected to be around 28.470MHz+/- for SSB, 28.023MHz+/- for CW and 28.088MHz+/- for RTTY. Here is a link to check the guys out. VK9LA”
Quite a good weekend with lots of DX on for the 10-10 mobile contest. But once again not many Gs anywhere in the list except for M0VPE on Thursday and GW8IZR on Sunday. ET3AA (Ethiopia) was very popular for obvious reasons as was FM5AA (Martinique), J88NEF (Windward Is) and loads of others.

Myrton, N1GKE is close to beacon WA1LAD/B He comments,
“Always listening for beacons b4 anything else. This beacon is very nearby. Called CQ for an hour or so on 28.400 SSB, no replies. Waiting/hoping the band opens so my bride (W1GKE/Debbie) can work some stations too. She has been studying like heck for the general class ticket so to enjoy HF activities. Many 73 from Rhode Island, US”.
Excellent stuff and we wish you and Debbie many happy hours of DX chasing on Ten Metres.
Saturday VR2CB, Carl, worked S21RC 5/9, VU2NKS 5/9, 9W2YCC 4/3, 9W2MZY 5/8, VK7BBB 5/7, 9W2VVH 5/5, JA3BDP 5/4, VR2VBV 5/9, VK5BC 4/3, JA5SRJ 5/9, JO3AQXC/M 5/3, JH1BLX 4/2, JA5CH 5/3 and heard: VK5MRD 4/3. “Mostly inter-Asian contacts for me. Interestingly VK7BBB in Tasmania was the strongest VK station I copied with only two other VKs heard by me.”
Sunday Carl worked: VK4CQ 5/7, KG6DX 5/9, JA7OWD 5/3, VK2FMAN 5/5, VK6JR/MM 4/2, BD9TD 5/9, 9W2WF 5/9, 9W2CDI 5/9, HS0AC/OH2LZC 5/9, HS0ZIN 5/9,
“I heard some VKs working in to Europe but I myself did not hear a peep from the Europeans. Ross (VK4CQ) informed me he also worked a number of USA stations, and even across to the Caribbean, but again zilch was heard by me from that direction. It is interesting to note that the solar flux was only around the 70 mark so I guess it must be down to seasonal influence.”
Contests.
Information from WA7BNM Contest Calendar. This weekend there is really only one contest.
CQ WW WPX Contest, SSB 0000Z, Mar 28 to 2359Z, Mar 29

MT. REDOUBT ERUPTS:
After months of teasing seismic activity, Alaska's Mt. Redoubt finally erupted on March 23rd. The blast hurled clouds of ash into the lower stratosphere at least 18 km high. The last time an Alaskan volcano blew its top (Kasatochi in August 2008), stratospheric aerosols caused fantastic sunsets around the northern hemisphere - a phenomenon that could recur in the days and weeks ahead.
Mt. Redoubt isn't finished.
"A large explosion may occur again at anytime," says the Alaska Volcano Observatory. (Spaceweather.com)
Finally, a really unusual photo from my Canary Island trip.
A family of cacti out for a walk about. The little ones could hardly keep up.
