Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
07 May, 2009

Just a phenomenal last week. Daily reported contacts went as follows: Monday 147, Tuesday 332, Wednesday 185, Thursday 333, Friday 948, Saturday 1437 and Sunday 1095!!

I, unfortunately, had to watch Stoke lose to West Ham (unluckily) on Saturday and mend a poorly designed headlight levelling sensor on my Mazda RX8 on Sunday. Such is life.

Most popular DX (three or more contacts, any mode)
If I get such a load of data again I will up the list requirements for entry but as this week is exceptional I thought you all might want to see just where you are in relation to everyone else. Generally speaking the most popular stations are earlier in the list with spotters and beacons (/B) at the end.

Myrton, N1GKE, heard: W6PC/4/B 28.251, KB1NRB/B 28.252, KP3FT/B 28.222, NE8J CQ'ing 28.026.
He says, “Daily check of ten metres, especially in evening. Waiting for an opening. Very 73 from Rhode Island and thanks for your so many reports.” OK no problem.

Dave, VK5MRD continues with his efforts.

Friday 01/05/2009. Stations heard were:- JA2IGY/b, ZL2MHF/b, ZL3TEN/b, VK2RSY/b, VK4RTL/b and VK8VF/b. Stations worked were:-VK2SP, VK2SD, VK2ON and VK4AZF.

Saturday 02/05/2009. Stations heard were:- JA2IGY/b, JA2FDX, JA6WIF, JA7LGU, BA7IO, BD7NWF, 9W2CBL, KH6WO/b, VK2RSY/b, VK4RTL/b and VK8VF/b. “Due to a family commitment most of my day was just listening when I could get near the radio.” Looking after the family that day were you Dave? Happens to the best of us.

Sunday 03/05/2009. Stations heard were:- JA2IGY/b, 9W6SUE, KH6WO/b, AD5VJ and VK2RSY/b.Stations worked were:- Only VK5’s.

Monday 04/05/2009. Stations heard were:- JA2IGY/b, KH6WO/b, VK2RSY/b, VK4RTL/b, VK4HR and VK8VF/b. “There were also some quite weak US stations out there too but they were way too weak for me to pull out of the QRN.” Stations worked were:-VK2FMOR and VK4CQ.

CE2WZ, David says, “This was a pretty good week for 10 metres down here.

2nd May good QSOs with USA all worked in the course of an hour.” W2KV, W5PDW, KJ4EKF, N5YFT, AG6X, N5MEG, KC5ZXR, KE5YLM, VE3JAS, K6OKW, N4DXX, K0PK, K6VFF/M, KC8VRR, W4MUO, 3rd May, K5RQ, XE1RBV, J88NEF, YN6KN, KB5RHD, 4th May, LU7FSM

I was particularly pleased to be called by the Nicaraguan and Windward Island stations and to work Canada. I worked the ARI contest over the weekend but no openings on 10 metres into Europe.

Tim, M0URX, from Kenilworth seems to have made the best of the good conditions (not a soccer supporter then). Saturday he worked: I5KAP, SM4JST, EW1KV, YL3HA, SP5ADX, OZ1ADL, ES8JTM, RA2FGK, LY1NM, LA2OKA, OH6LXI, UA1AFT, ET3AA ,S58AL, YO2CLL, OM4KK and EA6AZ. He heard: TL0A. He comments “Saturday conditions were much better than the day before to most parts of Europe were workable, especially Scandinavia around midday. Best Q and a new one for me on 10m was ET3AA Abel in Ethiopia.” Sunday was similar, working LZ1ZF, YP9W, YT2T, EB4GLT, MW0JRX, 9A6Z, CT2JTI, YO2LFM, HA5JI, S56WYB, UT5DH, SQ9JXN and YO2MBG. “Pretty good in the morning but dropped off quickly after midday. over 3 days i have logged 34 DXCCs on 10m so lets hope this continues!”
It will not and I’ll tell you for why, I am free and there is no soccer or cricket to distract me, so conditions will be poor.

Graham, WE5I sent in a non-ten metre report but I’ll include it as it has some interest as conditions have been strange (good!).

“While I was not active this week on 10 Meters, I did start the Summer Sporadic Es season off right. On Saturday evening I worked Dave, N4DB in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio on 50.550 AM with 2.75 watts. My D-104 feeds the audio to a Heathkit HW-29A "Sixer" lunchbox radio, which is putting the signal to a 5/8 wave Norwalk Electronics Dominator 6 at 25ft. At 860 air miles from my QTH in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma that QSO requires just .0032 watts per mile!” Fairly impressive that.

Joe, G3ZDF worked HZ1AN 5/6 and comments, ”Some ear-blastingly loud Italian and East European on Friday evening.”

On Tuesday Bob, G7PAF worked OM5PM, SQ5BU, SQ2LIG, OM5MO, SQ2LYN, OK2BEH, OK1GW, SQ9AMH, SQ2MTG, OM1AMS, LY4N, OE1KTC, SQ9MES/M, HA8CL, SQ9HZM and SP5COC. His location is location is Gildersome West Yorks IO93ES and he is “using an FT-1000mkV Field 250 watts into a cushcraft MA5b up at 37 feet AGL and 475 ASL favourite band is 10m. I will try and submit as and when.”
Good, all contributions gratefully received.

Contests: Not too much this week.

Sun: Blank again, BUT Astronomers are watching the edge of the sun, waiting for the emergence of an active region that produced a bright CME on May 5 th. At the time of the explosion, the blast site was hidden behind the sun's eastern limb, but now solar rotation is turning the region toward Earth for a better view. Will a sunspot appear to break the monotony of the blank sun?

And Stoke have 3 matches left and should be safe except for an out break of mathematical improbabilities. Hull away, then Wigan at home (last match at home) and Arsenal away. I’m seeking tickets for the Arsenal match!!
