Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
19 November, 2008

Not the best week all round. Generally poor propagation, England lose the first one-day test against India and Stoke crash 5-0 to Man U.
Still, you win some, you lose some.

VK and PY seem to have been back in contention with Big Dave top on Monday and V51AS (Namibia) and Z29KM (Zimbabwe) top at the weekend.

KG4MGB, David (not Dave), says,
“QTH is Virginia 20 miles sw of Washington DC. 10 has been dead for 2 months. Was working many contacts with this setup in late summer, as far west as Baja California and east to Bermuda. All I have is a 10 metre dipole at 20 ft, but have two good radios (JST245) and Kenwood 530SP. Am hearing zip....not one QSO heard much less worked. Do hear regular cw activity in the 28.390-95 area.”

Thanks for the info David and zilch reports are useful to know what’s going (or not) on where.

Rudy’s (PD5SS) sole contribution this week was to hear CN8IG at 5/7 so he’s obviously had a tough week too. Monday 17/11/2008.

Big Dave - VK5MRD

Our own Dave, VK5MRD, has had a tough work load and reports,
“I have been flat out with work commitments over the last week so I have not had much time to get near the radio. Saturday night I was able to work BU2AQ who was 5/9+20dB. Stations heard were:- VK2RSY/b, VK8VF/b, JA2IGY/b, VR2B/b.
By the way the "/b" indicates a beacon station.”

Ah yes. It kinda fooled me because /b and /B are used but also several stations are not only beacons but normal SSB/CW stations as well. eg K6FRC has K6FRC/B (28.250), K6FRC/B1 (28.300), K6FRC/B2 (28.300) and K6FRC/B3 (28.300) as well as his ‘home’ station.
In the UK we also used to have /A, to denote an alternative location (i.e. when not at the registered address, not sure if its used any more.) And /P for portable, /M for mobile and /MM for maritime mobile (not sure if that’s used anymore).

“Tuesday 18/11/2008. Stations heard were:- VK2RSY/b, VK4RTL/b, VK4RKC 10m repeater, VK8VF/b, ZL2MHF/b, ZL6B/b and TI8AA. Stations worked were:- VK1AP, VK4JGH, VK4LS, VK7JCR, VK7FMPR, VK7HDX ( worked on SSB, AM and FM and also on the VK5RSC 10m repeater), ZL2DJB and ZL1LE. It was great to see our friends from across the pond on 10m today.”

Funny really, as I always think of “ across the pond” as being in the USA whereas for Dave it means New Zealand.

Contests: Just the one this weekend, the LZ (Bulgarian) DX contest 12:00 Saturday to 12:00 Sunday.

Sun: Spot 1008 is almost over the edge of the sun and gone. I watched the recent night time launch of the mission to ISS. Pre-launch was good and informative but the launch itself was just a glare and somewhat disappointing. But I had a rather good glass of Australian Shiraz in my hand so the time was not wasted.

More rumours about rf from 'TUT Towers' but these are so far unsubstantiated. It is said, by those who should know better, that everything comes to he who waits. Well, waiting for ‘TUT to get on “the mic.” could just disprove that one.

And hopefully my daughter has just popped over to the telecoms office in Hong Kong to re-new my VR licence. Speaking of which we still have had no word from Carl ex VR2CB. Carl if you’re reading this drop us a note to say what’s happening.

Last words: England beat Australia in the Hong Kong 6s.
A fantastic ending all down to the last ball and a tie but England win on losing less wickets. Great stuff. Shame I couldn’t be there. Last year I was there but couldn’t get a ticket!!
