Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
22 October, 2008

A quick glance down at the list will tell you that this was an excellent week on 10m provided you weren’t in the UK!!

Most popular stations by a long way were 9L1X (Sierra Leone), VK9DWX (Willis Is), VP8LP (Falkland Is) who will be on the air for CQ WW, There are too many real DX stations to mention them all, but PZ5RA (Surinam/Suriname), K5S (East Ship Island) are worth a note.

Not many Gs (or later reincarnations)!!

Most popular DX
(three or more contacts, any mode)

K6FRC, Paul, is still getting no joy (on 10m!) but did find an uplifting moment with WWV.
“Despite one of my 10m beacons being heard in Florida and Panama this last week, I have not copied any DX on 10m at all in California.

Not 10m related, but interesting. For the first time in my lifetime, WWV is actually off frequency! Saturday the 18th at 20:00z, WWV's 10 MHz. frequency is actually low enough from its assigned carrier freq. that it is getting heterodyned by WWVH in Hawaii. Wow, I never thought I would see the day. Looks like they might be having popsicles in Hades today with skiing on the agenda.”
Paul, if you find out the reason for this or an apology gets put out let us know.

Big Dave, VK5MRD, freed from the previous week’s constraint of a wedding anniversary managed some time at the rig.
“I managed to squeeze in some time on the radio today and at last I was able to work some stations on 10m.
Stations heard were:- VK4RTL/B, VK8VF/B, VK2RSY/B, JA2IGY/B.
Stations worked were:- VK7XX, 9W6SUE, BD7MVZ
I also worked XE1 (Mexico) on 15m but then that`s a story for another band report.”

For a good customer like Dave, we’ll let that 15m contact sneak in. It looks like not a lots is happening for VK or G when you compare Dave’s list to the list above. Me, I heard nothing all week.

Contests: The BIG ONE, CQ WW SSB is on 00:00 Saturday to 24:00 Sunday. There are others including a 10-10 International CW/Digi contest, how perverse is that at the same time as CQ WW SSB??? The following stations/countries are reported to be on ten metres during the contest and maybe after: C6APR (Crooked Is), CQ4IPY (Portugal), TO5DX (St. Barthelemy), VP5T (Turks & Caicos Is), Nicaragua, YN low power during the contest and H7 from 22 November.

Sun: No sunspots at the moment but a curiously short-lived type of gamma-ray burst has astronomers puzzled. Leading experts discuss the clues at the Gamma-ray Burst Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama. NASA has the full story here

And so to the most important news of the week, Stoke beat Spurs 2:1 and it should have been more. Ricardo Fuller, our regular penalty taker, hit both uprights and the Rory (The Throw) hit the crossbar. 11 minutes of injury time, what a nail biter. An then it took me 5¾ hours to drive home, normally takes 2½ hours. M1 closed for 2 hours owing to a vehicle fire!!
