Stealth wind turbines can't be seen in NorfolkWind turbines can 'blind' Homeland Defense radar systems but now UK company Qinetiq has developed ‘Stealth Turbine’ technology. A windfarm can create a radar 'blind spot' that extends up to 400km above the windfarm and over a 100 km behind it. This means they can poise a significant threat to national security since any aircraft flying in over the windfarm may not be detected. A stealth turbine is designed using radar absorbing materials in the blades, nacelle and tower. A recent trial in Norfolk involved the fitting of the prototype stealth blade onto a Vestas V90 turbine and radar cross section measurements showed significant reductions. A press release from 2005 points out that "Windfarms can produce severe interference with radars potentially jeopardising flight safety". It would appear that windfarms don't do wildlife any favours either. In his Sunday Times newspaper column on September 18, 2005 Michael Portilio, UK Secretary of State for Defence '95-97 and former MP for Enfield Southgate, described how in Spain windfarms were spreading like a vicious pox scything down migrating birds. In a single month, 47 vultures headed for the Straits of Gibraltar were felled by turbine blades.
